Feast of Trumpets
Quote:
Leviticus 23:24-25
Introduction
We come to the three Jewish feasts that are celebrated around autumn; these are the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonements, and the Feast of Tabernacles. The Feast of Trumpets marks the beginning of the Jewish New Year in the Civil Calendar. It is observed during the month of Tishrei (September / October), which is actually the seventh month of the Religious Calendar. The New Year actually covers the first two days of Tishrei.
Happy Birthday World!
In Hebrew 'Feast of Trumpets' is 'Rosh HaShanah'. 'Rosh' means 'head / chief' and 'Shanah' means 'year.' According to tradition, this was the day when God created the world, though some suggest it was the day that Adam was made. Psalm 47 is read before the trumpet is blown; it is a call to all nations to acknowledge God as the Creator and King over all the earth.
The Day of Awakening
Psalm 98:6 reads, "With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King." At the Feast of Trumpets the Shofar is blown to announce the New Year and to call the people to repentance, it is therefore known as 'The Day of the Awakening Blast.' It has always been God's will to awaken His people out of spiritual slumber (Ephesians 5:14; 1 Corinthians 15:46; Isaiah 51:9).
The Shofar is first mentioned in Exodus 19:16 in connection with the revelation of God on Mount Sinai. It was used to assemble Hebrew warriors to battle against their enemies. God often sounds the Shofar in our spirit when the enemy of our souls comes against us. It should not surprise us to learn that the Shofar was also used to herald freedom from slavery (Leviticus 25:9-10).
The Day of Judgement
'The Day of Judgement' is an alternative name for this feast. Jewish tradition suggests that God will judge all men on this day at the end of the ages, we understand this to be the Resurrection of the Dead. Those who are the servants of God will enter into Heaven, while those who have rebelled against Him will suffer eternal doom in Hell (Daniel 7:9-14; Revelation 4:1-2). It is interesting that the twelve months of the Hebrew calendar represent each one of the twelve tribes of Israel. In Hebrew 'Day of Judgement' is 'Yom HaDin.' 'Din' is derived from 'Dan.' Rachel named her son Dan (born to her maid Bilhah) saying, "God hath judged me (dannani)" (Genesis 30:6). It may be significant that even the Pagan Zodiac uses scales to symbolise Tishrei (September / October).
The Day of Hiding
Yet another name for 'Rosh HaShanah' is 'The Day of Hiding.' In Psalm 27:5 the Psalmist declares, "For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock." Again, according to Jewish tradition, Satan will not be given notice regarding the arrival of the final Day of Trumpets / Judgement. This idea is taken from Psalm 81:3, "Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day," which in Hebrew reads, "Sound the Shofar on the New Moon, in concealment of the day of our festival." The Lord Jesus Christ tells us, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" (Matthew 24:36).
The Messiah's Reign
God will one day reign over all the earth through the Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. The last Rosh HaShanah will be both the beginning of the new age and the coronation of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. A trumpet will announce His coming (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). At this time the true followers of Christ will be caught up into the air to be with Him (the rapture), but He will return three and half years later to set up His Millennial Reign (Revelation 19:16; 20:4).
