Thomas More Malpractices Erasmus

Listening to Will Durant's History of Civilization series, specifically the volume on the Reformation, I came across this fascinating tidbit:

Following a visit to England where he met with the future King Henry VIII the Dutch humanist was heading home. He was advised by Thomas More, the future Lord Chancellor of England, that he could leave with his gold so long as it wasn't in the form of English currency. Erasmus took his advice and converted it to French coinage instead. However, once he reached the border his money was confiscated because the law was, in fact, such that no one could leave England with ANY gold currency. Had Erasmus been properly advised he might have converted his currency to goods or made other arrangements. But relying on the advice of the future author of Utopia, he lost all his money.

Proverbs 29:2 "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."
