Bro. Tim:steelmaker, out of curiosity, how do you read the phrase "one more exact translation"? I (and it appears DC also) read it as ONE translation that is MORE EXACT than the previous were. You appear to read it as ONE MORE translation among many EXACT translations. Does the MORE describe the EXACTness of the translation (KJB), or that MORE fits with ONE to describe the quantity of EXACT translations? I accept the first meaning as the intended one.

Not trying to be sarcastic, but they wouldn'ta hardly written "one more INexact translation".

During the reign of QE1, the Anglican church asked her for permission to make a new Bible to be a standard for that church. she gave her OK, but her death interrupted the plans for a time, until a new monarch could be established, and after that monarch, KJ, took the throne, just what HIS policy would be. he gave his OK, & the work proceeded, with 47 of the panel of 54 translators actually working on the project. it was known that KJ despised the footnotes of the geneva Bible, the then-current english standard, so they strove to keep them at a minimum. also, the translators' boss, Archbishop Richard Bancroft, drew up 14 rules for the translators to work by, getting KJ to approve them. Banny presented the rules as if the king had written them & not himself. this, & Banny's toady constant praise of KJ led to the new Bible being called the "King James" version.

A careful reading of the preface of the AV shows its makers did not consider themselves infallible, nor did they diss the earlier versions. Thus, I believe theis statement , 'one more exact translation', meant that they believed at least one of the earlier translations was exact. they wrote in that preface, "Now to the latter we answer, that we do not deny, nay, we affirm and avow, that the very meanest translation of the Bible in English, set forth by men of our profession, (for we have seen none of theirs of the whole Bible as yet) containeth the Word of God, nay, is the Word of God.
