Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:14 -16

For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity.
And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins.
And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.
So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews 5:1-10

Hebrews chapter four begins a discussion of Jesus Christs office of High Priest that carries through Hebrews chapter five.

In chapter four we are told that Jesus Christ, our High Priest has gone through everything we have gone through.
Because our High priest has gone through our trials and temptations, we can go BODLY before the throne of grace, knowing that our High Priest has walked in our shoes and understands our supplications.
He will answer us with mercy and grace and He will help us as an empathetic High Priest.

In chapter five, the writer of Hebrews explains the high priests duties of offering gifts and sacrifices.
Christ as High Priest is compared to Aaron and Melchizedek.

Hebrews 5:4 states,
And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

Aaron did not take the honor of high priest to himself.
He was called to be high priest by God.

The writer of Hebrews quotes our thesis verse, Psalm 2:7, in connection to Christs priestly office.

This comparison is applied to Christ in Hebrews 5:5,
So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

We need to observe a couple of things in Hebrews 5:5

1. The writer of Hebrews understands a connection to Christ being MADE a high priest to Christ being BEGOTTEN as Gods Son.
2. Psalm 2:7 is NOT quoted in connection with the SACRIFICIAL DUTIES of the high priest. It is quoted in connection with BEING MADE a high priest.

Christ was MADE a high priest before He sacrificed himself on the cross, just as Aaron and Melchisedek were MADE high priests before they offered any sacrifices.

Just as the preceding verse, Hebrews 5:4 related this to Aaron, the next verse, Hebrews 5:6, relates this to Melchisedek-

Heb 5:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

So here we have Psalm 2:7 sandwiched in between the two examples of Aaron as high priest and Melchisedek as high priest.

Psalm 2:7 is NOT quoted in relation to Christs death, burial and resurrection in Hebrews 5:5.
It is quoted in relation to Christs being ordained a High Priest and intercessor for our sins.

How did Christ as High Priest intercede for our sins?

Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;
Heb 5:8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;
Heb 5:9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;

He interceded for our sins by His death, burial, and resurrection!
The death, burial, and resurrection is offered as PROOF that Jesus Christ was made the FINAL High Priest.
It is the PROOF of Psalm 2:7, just as we saw in Acts 13:33 and Romans 1:3, 4!

Hebrews chapter 5 declares loudly that Christs SONSHIP is connected with His office of High Priest!

Just as He was MADE High Priest, so also was He MADE Son -

Heb 5:6 As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

How was Jesus Christ made High Priest?

By DECLARATION!
He was made High Priest by a DECREE OF GOD!

How was Jesus Christ made Son?

Heb 5:5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree : the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son ; this day have I begotten thee.

In closing, brethren, the word of God is very plain on this doctrine. The whole thing is understood correctly when one reads Psalm 2:7 without manipulating the text of Scripture.

The eternal Sonship proponent believes that they are being orthodox and that they are elevating Jesus Christ by believing that He was eternally the Son of God.
But, as we have seen, this actually DETRACTS from the Deity of Jesus Christ.

We must BELIEVE the text of the Bible and stop trying to "help God out."

The King James Bible could not be any clearer on the doctrine of the incarnational Sonship of Jesus Christ.
