Heb 1:5 "For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?"
Hebrews 1:5 is the second time that Psalm 2:7 is quoted in the New Testament. The author of Hebrews is comparing Jesus Christ to the angels.
Interestingly enough, there are some instances where angels are called sons of God. (Gen. 6:2,4; Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7)
In the Bible the term son of God always refers to a unique DIRECT perfect creation of God.
This would apply to the angels. (see passages above)
This would apply to us as born again Christians. (John 1:12)
This would apply to Israel . (Ex. 4:22; Hos 11:1)
And this would apply to Christ as God manifest in the flesh -
Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but
a body hast thou prepared me:
Heb 2:7
Thou madest him a little lower than the angels
; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
Heb 2:9 But we see
Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels
for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
In the verses quoted above, it is beneficial to notice that Jesus BODY is connected with his DEATH. Hence, this serves as an additional commentary to Pauls words in Acts 13:33.
The second half of Hebrews 1:5 is quoted from II Samuel 7:14.
And again, I
will be
to him a Father, and he
shall be
to me a Son?
The writer of Hebrews takes the promise given to David for Solomon and applies it to God the Father and Christ.
This definitely places Christ's Sonship in the FUTURE of II Samuel 7:14, and not in the PAST.
Before we end these notes on Hebrews 1, I also want to look at Hebrews 1:6.
Heb 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
I have seen "eternal Sonship" proponents attempt to make this verse about Christ's Second coming instead of His First in order to avoid the incontrovertable implications of this verse.
This is an interpretation the King James Bible will NOT allow.
Notice the careful placement of the word
again
and the
comma
in Hebrews 1:5.
Heb 1:5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And
again,
I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
The writer of Hebrews is NOT saying that God will be a Father AGAIN or that Jesus Christ will be a Son AGAIN.
He is simply quoting the Old Testament again.
This same careful placement of the word
again
and the
comma
is found in Hebrews 1:6.
Heb 1:6 And
again,
when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
The author of Hebrews DOES NOT SAY
"when he again bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world"
The modern versions have MESSED with the careful placement of the King James punctuation in order to make Hebrews 1:6 refer to Jesus Christs Second Coming rather than His First.
Hebrews 1:6 (
NASB
)
And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."
Hebrews 1:6 (
NKJV
)
But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: Let all the angels of God worship Him.
Hebrews 1:6 (
Holman Christian Standard Bible
)
When He again brings His firstborn into the world, He says, And all God's angels must worship Him.
Hebrews 1:6 (
Amplified Bible
)
Moreover, when He brings the firstborn Son again into the habitable world, He says, Let all the angels of God worship Him.
Folks, God DOES NOT bring Jesus Christ into this world when He comes again. When Jesus Christ comes again it is in HIS OWN Power and Glory. These modern versions are WRONG and the King James Bible is CORRECT, right down to the COMMAS (jots and tittles.)
Hebrews 1:6 is referring to God sending Jesus into this world to be born of a virgin and die for our sins. It DOES NOT refer to Jesus Christ coming back in GREAT POWER to rule and reign.
Heb 1:6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
let all the angels of God worship him
.
Luk 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host
praising God
, and saying,
Luk 2:14
Glory to God in the highest
, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
"Firstbegotten" In Hebrews 1:6 refers to his resurrection.
His resurrection happened 33 years AFTER God brought "in the firstbegotten into the world."
If Jesus was not "firstbegotten" until His resurrection, how could God send the "firstbegotten" into the world BEFORE His resurrection?
Hebrews 1:6 is NOT speaking chronologically when it say God sent His "firstbegotten" into the world.
It is simply calling Jesus by the titles He is NOW known by.
It would be like saying "President Bush grew up in Texas."
Well, he wasn't 'President' Bush when he grew up in Texas.
That's the title he is NOW known by.
Jesus Christ was NOT Gods Son until He was born of the virgin.
This is the doctrine of the King James Bible, friends, and NOT something I have made up.
The decision is whether to go against tradition and orthodoxy and BELIEVE the King James Bible, or to stay stuck in the rudiments of this world.
Our next study will be on Hebrews 5:5
