Hi Folks,
bibleprotector
"there is other witness to the text of the OT besides the Mesoretic Text) was used by the translators of 1611, since they took a holistic view, which included using the Vulgate, Junius' Latin, etc. This would be the honest view. Because they were wise, they could correctly weigh the LXX or the Vulgate, which were not worthless, nor unhelpful."
The Vulgate does not have major variance from the Masoretic Text as it was translated from the Hebrew at 400 A.D. (Nor the Peshitta which was earlier.) Any early translation (Vulgate, Peshitta or Greek OT) could be helpful in difficult words such as animals and plants, in places where the Hebrew was unknown or ambiguous (rabbinics like Kimchi and Rashi would be another source).
Junius was only a few years before the translation so again his text would similarly be used for vocabulary.
However there is no place that I have ever seen that the King James Bible translators used the Greek OT text over the Masoretic Text where they differ. The Greek OT was not used as a variant text source.
Shalom,
Steven
