What does this mean, that God has given us the "earnest of the Spirit in our hearts"? When a man in Jesus' day intended to buy something he couldn't afford to purchase at that moment, he would put down "earnest" money. The greater the down payment, the greater the indication that full payment will be made.
For instance, if you're selling your home for $100,000 and a prospective buyer gives you $5, don't look for that person again. But if he gives you $50,000, he means business, and you know he's coming back.
In today's terminology, we would say that God has given us a down payment of the Spirit.
I know not why God’s wondrous graceTo me He hath made known,Nor why, unworthy, Christ in loveRedeemed me for His own.But “I know Whom I have believed,And am persuaded that He is ableTo keep that which I’ve committedUnto Him against that day.”
I know not how this saving faithTo me He did impart,Nor how believing in His WordWrought peace within my heart.
I know not how the Spirit moves,Convincing men of sin,Revealing Jesus through the Word,Creating faith in Him.
I know not what of good or illMay be reserved for me,Of weary ways or golden days,Before His face I see.
I know not when my Lord may come,At night or noonday fair,Nor if I walk the vale with Him,Or meet Him in the air.
