HELL AND THE LAKE OF FIRE
Thank you Jerry Rose for your very good and scriptural contribution to the subject of “Did Christ pay the penalty of our sins in the Lake of Fire?” (One thing, I will take up with you later is the subject of blashphemy against the Holy Ghost.) I realise that hell and the lake of fire referred to in scripture, are two different places. I purposely used the term “lake of fire” as I believe that Catholics believe that Christ paid for their sins by going to the caverns of the lost, or a place of torment. The point of this post was to say that Christ did not go to hell, (a place of suffering) for three days, as they believe. Maybe I should not have used the term Lake of Fire, but hell instead, as this would have been more correct! This however, gives me an opportunity to point out the difference between the two places and the Scriptures in support of this. Seventh Day Adventists, may benefit from this, as well as other cults who do not believe in a literal place called Hell and the Lake of Fire, although only the Spirit of God can reveal these truths to them
The reference to the bottomless pit or the abyss is found in Revelation 9:1&2.
“And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.” This description is found amid the terrors of the “Great Tribulation,”
which will happen in the future, after the church (born again Christians) has been raptured. This bottomless pit is the abode of demonic spirits. Another reference to this same place is found in the Book of Revelation ch. 20:1-3.
“And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years.”
This is at the beginning of the Millennial reign of the King of King’s and Lord of Lord’s, the Lord Jesus Christ. This is the Messiah, promised by the prophets and prophecies in the O.T., whom the Jews rejected and said they would “not have this Man to reign over us,” thus the Kingdom, which the heavens rule, or the "Kingdom of Heaven," first mentioned in Daniel 4:25&26, was postponed and now the literal fulfilment has eventuated as seen in the Millenium reign of Christ. The heir of David, the Lord Jesus Christ will reign over the earth for the thousand years from His father David’s throne!
Christ said in speaking of that day, “And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and the west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. (Matt.8:11.) "The Gospel of the Kingdom" or the "Kingdom of Heaven," is mentioned 32 times in Matthew’s Gospel and not again in the any of the other gospels, as it is entirely Jewish in nature and origin. What we preach today is the Gospel of the Grace of God, this is for Jew and Gentile, or for the “whosoever will”, none are exempt, if they will only repent and believe the gospel! (Do not believe the Calvinistic lie, it is from this pit, we are speaking about!)
Back to the subject, so easy to get side-tracked, sorry.
The Hebrew word sheol, is the equivalent for Hades, and is likewise the subterranean abode of all the dead until the Great White Throne judgment. It was divided into two departments, Paradise or Abraham’s bosom, for the good, or those who obeyed God and it was counted to them for righteousness, e.g., Abraham; and Gehanna or hell, for the bad, or those who did not obey God, but continued in their own wicked ways!
So hades was in two compartments before Christ died. But, after the far-reaching event of the ascention of Christ, it is clear that there is a difference. Luke in ch. 16:19-31 sets forth the account of the rich man and Lazarus, and this is NOT a parable as such, it is NEVER a parable when REAL NAMES ARE USED! It was a real occcurence, not like some sects would try to have you believe as they do, to not believe in a literal hell, where people will pay for their sins for all eternity, if not covered by the blood of Christ!!!
When the beggar died, he was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died and was buried; and in hell he lifted up his eyes being in torments and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.” v’s. 22, 23. “ ...besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from hence.” v.26. The rich man is evidently still in Hades, as there is no mention of any change in their abode or state, unlike with the resurrection of Christ, "where He led captivity captive," and "preached to the spirits in prison." Christ made the announcement of His finished work, declaring the condemnation of their unbelief to those in sheol or hell, and the salvation of Noah, which would include all O.T. saints who believed and their faith was counted to them for righteousness. (11Peter 2:4.) As to the rich man’s spirit, he was ALIVE AND FULLY CONSCIOUS, and was exercising his mental capabilities, and he was also TORMENTED! The blessed “dead,” those who obeyed God and believed or place their faith in God were conscious and “comforted.” (Luke 16:25)
When Christ died He went to the Paradise section of the compartments, not to the place of torments, or hell. So this compartment of Paradise, or region of the departed, in the underworld, is now empty, as Christ has ascended and taken those O.T. saints with Him, and they are now in heaven with Christ, where Christ sits at the right hand of God! Those who die henceforth from this time onward, went immediately to heaven to be with their Lord, “absent from the body, present with the Lord,” the Apostle Paul said. See also Jn. 14:2, 3; Phil. 1:23.
As the wicked or those who have rejected the Lord Jesus Christ, as their only Saviour and Lord (yes, this is the only sin that will keep one out of heaven!), die, their souls, like the rich man go to hell, or hades. At the Great White Throne judgment hades or hell will surrender the wicked. They will be judged for all their sin, as they never sheltered under the blood of the Lamb, they didn’t have on the wedding garments, they were still in their filthy rags, i.e. their own righteousness, not Christ’s righteousness, which can only be applied by applying the blood, or by accepting the sacrifice of the cross of Calvary where Christ died the death deserved by ME!!! One can’t be saved in a group, so to speak, it is an individual application of the will, heart and mind!
“BUT GOD BE THANKED, THAT YE WERE THE SERVANTS OF SIN, BUT YE HAVE OBEYED (WILL) FROM THE HEART (EMOTIONS) THAT FORM OF DOCTRINE (MIND) WHICH WAS DELIVERED YOU.” (Rom. 6:17.)
“AND THE SEA GAVE UP THE DEAD WHICH WERE IN IT;
AND DEATH AND HELL DELIVERED UP THE DEAD WHICH WERE IN THEM: AND THEY WERE JUDGED EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS. (Rev. 29:13.) (Remember this is the judgement of the unsaved, the saved are not judged according to their works, as all our works are as fithy rags in God's sight, until we are saved, then we are storing up treasure in heaven! The judgment of the redeemed has already passed, when God poured out His wrath on His spotless Son at Calvary! Make sure you are in this class of people, and not at this dreadful Great White Throne judgment!)
“AND DEATH AND HELL WERE CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH.” (V.14.)
“AND WHOSOEVER WAS NOT FOUND WRITTEN IN THE BOOK OF LIFE WAS CAST INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE.” (v.15.)
For those who do not believe in a literal hell, and you folks know who I mean, there are quite a few “religions” who do not believe in the eternal judgment of the wicked, please look into these things from the Word of God, and see for yourselves, it is all true, there is enternal damnation for unbelievers!
In the A.V. the word “sheol” is translated thirty-one times as “GRAVE”, thirty-one times “hell” and three times “pit.” The general idea is “the place of the dead;” and by this is meant, not the grave, as is commonly taught by these people, but the place of those who have departed this life!
This is why this term is used in reference to both the RIGHTEOUS and the WICKED. Of the righteous, see Psa. 16:10; 30:3; Isa. 38:10, etc.
Of the WICKED see, Num.16:33; Job 24:19; Psa. 9:17, et al.
The word “Gehenna” comes from the valley of Minnon, where the Jewish apostasy, the rites of Moloch, were celebrated (1Kings:11:7) It was converted by King Josiah into a place of abomination, where dead bodies were thrown and burnt. (11 Kings 23:13, 14.)
Hence the place served as a symbol, and it was appropriated to designate the abode of lost spirits. It is in this way the term was used by our Lord.
The word occurs twelve times in the N.T. and in every place it is properly translated “hell” denoting the eternal state of the lost after the resurrection. The meaning of the English word which overbears all others is particularly the meaning of Gehenna. See Matt.5:22, 29, 30; 10:28;18:9 ;23:15,33; Mark 9:43, 45, 47; Luke 12:5; James 3:6. It is not only necessary to the understanding of quite a large number of passages in the N.T., but also it may prevent misconstruction and remove uncertainty as to Christ’s teaching with regard to the future state of the wicked, until the Great White Throne Judgment! It also has an important bearing upon the doctrine of “Christ’s descending into hell." "When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive , and gave gifts to men." (Eph.4:8-10) Then Paradise was emptied, as He took them all with Him, when he rose from the dead, and all that remained was the compartment of Hell or Hades, Gehanna, the grave or sheol.
May God bless these precious truths to your souls!
